“住在…街”在英式英语中用live in,在美式英语中用live on;“住在…号”和“住在(…街)…号”在英式英语中和美式英语中都用at。

这两者都可表示“靠…过活”。接职业时只能用live off,不能用live on。例如:

He prefers to live on his salary and not to spend his savings.他愿意花他的工资生活而不动用储蓄金。

For the first half of the year we live off the silkworms;for the second half, we live off the land.头半年我们靠养蚕生活,后半年靠种地生活。

这两者意义并不相同。live by的意思是“靠…过活”,指的是手段;live on的意思是“靠…为生”,指的是来源。例如:

He lived by writing.他以写作为生。

With the rising cost of living, it is hard for the old people to live on their pensions.由于生活费用不断上涨,老年人靠养老金生活已很困难了。
